This house is one of these handfuls that survived the Camp Fire in Paradise- it had recently upgraded roof and vents, and no plants growing next to house.

Fine mesh installed under low deck, to prevent entrance of leaves and needles.

Instead of completely residing a house with noncombustible siding, the bottom 2 feet can be replaced instead, such as for this Pleasant Valley house.

In progress: Open eave being prepared to close in the soffit. Thin fiber cement imade for soffitsi will then be screwed onto the new under eave framing.

Home hardening does not have to be expensive. Keeping the area under a deck completely clear of anything combustible is very effective at reducing risk. Diamond Springs home

Gaps can develop at various places at roof edge, exposing underlying wood sheathing to embers and ignition. Caulk or flashing can be used to cover any such gaps > 1/8"

Flame and ember resistant vent being installed after old 1/4" vent was removed. Can also be placed on top of old vent.

Flashing covering bottom of old wood siding, where fiber-cement siding is being added on top (right side) Such flashing gives a noncombustible bottom wall edge where embers can pile up. Consult a contractor to prevent water issues.

Installing gutter guards. Sturdy metal micromesh guards like this are best, and keep both leaves and pine needles out.

Fine-size metal screening (1/8 inch or less) installed over underside of decks that are less than 4 feet high. Prevents ember and debris accumulating and lighting the deck on fire from below.

Working to install fine mesh over irregular sized gable vent.

Brick veneer over wood siding to give wall a noncombustible base, at inside corner where embers often accumulate. 2' Metal flashing over bottom of door serves the same purpose (painted to match door).
